Movement can best be prevented by a combination of adequate depth of anesthesia, along with neuromuscular blockade (titrated to appropriate levels using a twitch monitor). Opioids are particularly effective for preventing diaphragmatic movement because they reduce respiratory drive, and have been shown to be very effective in general for preventing response to surgical stimulation (Sebel et al, Anesth Analg 84:891, 1997).
